John
20:10-17
The apostle John writing (God speaking via scripture...The
Word), telling of Jesus' first ever post-resurrection appearing being first to a woman, Mary
Magdalene.
Wycliffe Bible of 1384:
King James Bible
of 1611: 10 Then the disciples went away
again unto their own home.
11 But Mary stood
without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the
sepulchre,
12 And seeth two
angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus
had lain.
13 And they say unto
her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my LORD, and I know
not where they have laid him.
14 And when she had
thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was
Jesus.
15 Jesus saith unto
her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto
him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him
away.
16 Jesus saith unto
her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
17 Jesus saith unto
her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto
them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your
God.
NAS Bible of
1960: 10 So the disciples went away again
to their own homes.
11 But Mary was
standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she stooped and looked into the
tomb;
12 and she saw two
angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been
lying.
13 And they said to
her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I
do not know where they have laid Him."
14 When she had said
this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was
Jesus.
15 Jesus said to her,
"Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?" Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to
Him, "Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him
away."
16 Jesus said to her,
"Mary!" She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which means, Teacher).
17 Jesus said to her,
"Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to
them, 'I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.'"
NIV Bible
1973-78: 10 Then the disciples went back to their
homes, 11 but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept,
she bent over to look into the tomb 12 and saw two angels in
white, seated where Jesus' body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.
13 They asked her, "Woman, why
are you crying?"
14 "They have taken my Lord
away," she said, "and I don't know where they have put him." At this, she turned around and saw
Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.
15 "Woman," he said, "why are you
crying? Who is it you are looking for?"
Thinking he was the gardener, she said, "Sir, if you have carried him
away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him."
16 Jesus said to her,
"Mary."
She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which
means Teacher).
17 Jesus said, "Do not hold on to
me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am
returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' "
