Another Special Life in Christ
These testimony lives are not stories of "role models". Jesus is the
role model!
These are lives wonderfully touched & changed by Jesus!
Anne Rice:
Born Howard Allen O'Brien on October 4, 1941 in
New Orleans, I refer you to her website. Born in 1941, she was a popular writer of vampire novels (popularly known as the "vampire chronicles"), who left the Catholic
Church when she was 18.
In an afterword to her Egypt book (Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt), Rice explains
how she researched the book. It is said that readers that book should begin here, because one cannot imagine reading the
novel without first reading the "afterward" explanation of her scholarship (absolutely meticulous and
in-depth) and her testimony about her return to faith.
So, Rice's return to faith 38 years later at age 56 was, in fact, facilitated
by her study. She was curious about who Jesus was and is. In her pursuit of truth about
Jesus, an academic and historical investigation, she bumped into "the Truth." Like C. S.
Lewis, her intellect led her to belief, and then her heart changed. Contrary to what some
popular evangelists say, intellectual assent can precede the change (the metanoia) of the
heart.
She expected that the arguments of skeptical New
Testament scholars would demonstrate "that Christianity was, at heart, a kind of fraud."
Instead, she found that their arguments were "reached on the basis of little or no data at
all." One must have tremendous respect for her willingness to examine so dispassionately, and
then set aside a position with which she had been in fundamental agreement. She read, thought,
and concluded that these writers were wrong. Jesus really is who the church has said he is. And
she has consecrated her work to Jesus.
UPDATE: Her "walk" as a Jesus follower has stirred controversy. To quote from the Wikipedia page on her: "On July 28, 2010, Rice publicly announced her disdain for the current state of Christianity on her Facebook page, stating, "Today I quit being a Christian.... I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being 'Christian' or to being part of 'Christianity'. It's simply impossible for me to 'belong' to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten years, I've tried. I've failed. I'm an outsider. My conscience will allow nothing else.' Shortly thereafter, she clarified her statement: 'My faith in Christ is central to my life. My conversion from a pessimistic atheist lost in a world I didn't understand, to an optimistic believer in a universe created and sustained by a loving God is crucial to me. But following Christ does not mean following His followers. Christ is infinitely more important than Christianity and always will be, no matter what Christianity is, has been, or might become.'" She has to repeat this clarification to critics from time to time. Her You Tube testimony (about 2010), I Am Second, is wonderful (she was an agnostic/atheist for 38 years...I was simply too busy to bother for 25 years). This excellent video is only 11 minutes, and I highly recommend that 11 minute investment!
