Another Special Life in Christ

Mac Rish:

Mayor takes a "hit"...oily hands bring recovery: In March of 1998, at age 58, this ordinarily thick-skinned politician heard words which cut to the core..."Mac, you've got cancer." As popular mayor of West Columbia, S.C., this came as terrifying news to a successful man riding high in his elected position. After gathering information and talking with friends and advisors, he did what appears to be an unusual (but perfectly biblically correct) thing, he took the advice of the Bible (James 5) and underwent the anointing with oil and the laying on of hands by the son of a Pentecostal minister and other elder-type officials in his Methodist church. Rather than do the politically correct thing of keeping his health status quiet, he and his family appealed for prayer from churches and friends throughout the area (it later turned out that prayers were lifted up as far away as Michigan). He then had chemotherapy and a stem-cell transplant; the bone marrow cancer effects and treatments resulted in a great deal of weight loss and loss of about 6 inches in height. Yet Mac enjoyed life to the fullest. On April 2, 2000, I was privileged to hear his testimony before the congregation of Northside Baptist Church. As a local physician, I knew full well that he had been expertly managed by competent, expert physicians. However, I was overjoyed (and felt goosebumps go up the back of my neck) as Wyman M. "Mac" Rish concluded his testimony, always and only having given glory and credit to God for his healing (never any mention of the treatments or the doctors) and thanks to all of those who had prayed for him. Mac died a respiratory death in Dec. 2003 related to the extreme spine curvature his cancer had originally set into motion...but reported cancer-free. There is power in the advice from our Almighty God contained in the Bible. We Christian physicians know all too well that any physical healing also comes from God as he possibly uses us and our procedures and our medicines in some of the healings which he miraculously performs.
